Advent
Means ‘coming’.
Period of prayerful preparation before Christmas.
Epiphany
From the Greek word meaning ‘revealing’.
Festival celebrated on the 6th January when the visit of the wise men, the first miracle and Jesus’ Baptism are remembered.
Lent
From the old English word for ‘Springtime’.
Time of spiritual preparation and fasting before the Easter celebration.
Holy Week
The week before Easter when many events from the last week of Jesus’ life are remembered.
Maundy Thursday
On Thursday in Holy Week. Last Supper is remembered where Jesus introduced the holy communion and Jesus’ arrest is remembered.
Good Friday
The day Jesus was crucified.
Good because of God’s sacrifice on our behalf.
Ash Wednesday
The beginning of Lent for Western Churches. Serious and solemn day.
Many Christians go to Church and the Priest marks them with a cross from the ashes of the previous year’s palm crosses.
Ascension
Jesus is taken up to heaven bodily, 40 days after his Resurrection.
Whitsun/ Pentecost
50 days after Easter.
Remembers the arrival of the Holy Spirit, sent by God to Christians to help and comfort them after the Ascension.
Sabbath
Day of rest and worship of God.
Pilgrimage
A journey to a religious place of significance for spiritual reasons.
Easter
The festival that celebrates Jesus’ resurrection.
Denomination
The type of Church that a Christian belongs to.
Paschal
Easter
Crucifixion
Method of Jesus’ execution.
