4 The Patriarchs - fathers from the Old Testament The Prophet Isaiah John the Baptist- the great messenger Mary mother of God
What do Christians do during Advent?
Reflect and pray and remember that they are not alone.
What does Christmas mean?
The mass of Christ- a service held to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Do all Christians celebrate Christmas on the same day?
No - it is different in the Orthodox Church. Although most celebrate on 25th December.
Why is Christmas so important?
The incarnation of God in human form
The prophecy from the Old Testament- Jesus as the Messiah
What does Epiphany mean?
Displaying, showing, revealing, manifestation.
What is remembered during Epiphany?
- wise men visited baby Jesus and brought gifts
- the first miracle (water into wine @ wedding in Cana)
- baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist
What is the significance of the visit of the wise men?
Gifts were symbolic
Gold = importance and kingship
Frankincense = holiness and worship
Myrrh = death of Jesus (used to anoint dead bodies)
What is the first miracle remembered at Christmas?
Shows Jesus’ divine power over nature.
Why is the baptism of Jesus so important at Christmas?
Shows the true nature of God - holy trinity
