NEGLIGENCE
The failure to exercise that degree of care which an ordinarily prudent person would exercise under like circumstances.
NEGOTIABLE (instrument)
Any instrument obligating the payment of money which is transferable from one person to another by endorsement and delivery or by delivery only.
NEGOTIATE
To transact business; to transfer a negotiable instrument; to seek agreement for the amicable disposition of a controversy or case.
NOLLE PROSEQUI
A formal entry upon the record by the plaintiff in a civil suit or the prosecuting officer in a criminal action, by which he declares that he “will no longer prosecute” the case.
NOLLE CONTENDERE
The name of a please in a criminal action, having the same effect as a plea of guilty; but not constituting a direct admission of guilt.
NOMINAL
Not real or substantial.
NOMINAL DAMAGES
Award of a trifling sum where no substantial injury is proved to have been sustained.
NONFEASANCE
Neglect of duty.
NOVATION
The substitution of a new debt or obligation for an existing one.
NUNC PRO TUNC
A phrase applied to acts allowed to be done after the time when they should be done, with a retroactive effect. (“now for then.”)
