Q

what is cycloplegia

A

Cycloplegia is a condition in which the ciliary muscles of the eye are temporarily paralyzed or relaxed using specific medications, typically cycloplegic eye drops.
The ciliary muscles are responsible for changing the shape of the eye’s lens to allow for accommodation (focusing on objects at different distances). When these muscles are paralyzed, the eye loses its ability to adjust its focus, resulting in a temporary loss of near vision.
Cycloplegia is often used in ophthalmology to conduct accurate refraction tests, especially in children, where it helps determine the true refractive error of the eye without the influence of the eye’s natural focusing ability.

Q

what is mydriasis

A

Mydriasis refers to the dilation of the pupil of the eye. This dilation can occur naturally in response to low light conditions or due to the influence of medications or drugs.
Medically induced mydriasis is typically achieved using mydriatic eye drops, which contain drugs that cause the pupil to dilate.
Mydriasis is often performed during eye examinations to provide a better view of the retina and the back of the eye. It allows an ophthalmologist to assess the health of the eye and diagnose conditions such as glaucoma or retinal diseases more effectively
