Leg Flashcards
What forms the superolateral boundary of the popliteal fossa?
Biceps femoris
What forms the superomedial boundary of the popliteal fossa?
Semitendinosous and Semimembranosous
What forms the inferior boundaries of the popliteal fossa?
Medial and lateral heads of gastrocnemius
What forms the roof and floor of the popliteal fossa?
Roof: Fascia lata
- Floor: Intercondylar area of femur, posterior joint capsule, popliteus muscle
What is the order of neurovascular structures in the popliteal fossa (medial to lateral)?
Popliteal artery → popliteal vein → tibial nerve
Which nerves pass through the popliteal fossa?
Tibial nerve, common fibular nerve, posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh
What vein and lymphatic structures are found in the popliteal fossa?
Terminal small saphenous vein, lymph nodes
What is the “screw home mechanism”?
Passive locking of the knee during last 30° of extension
What causes the knee to lock in full extension?
Medial rotation of femur on tibia due to larger medial condyle
What muscles maintain the locked knee position?
Vastus medialis, gluteus maximus, tensor fascia lata (via IT band)
What muscle unlocks the knee?
Popliteus (tibial nerve, L4-S1)
How does the popliteus unlock the knee?
Laterally rotates femur on fixed tibia
What other muscles contribute to knee rotation?
Pes anserinus – medial rotation of tibia
- Biceps femoris – lateral rotation of tibia
What muscles are in the superficial posterior compartment?
Gastrocnemius, Soleus, Plantaris
What nerve innervates these muscles?
Tibial nerve (S1, S2)
What is the “triceps surae”?
Gastrocnemius + Soleus (+ sometimes Plantaris)
What is the function of triceps surae?
Push body forward & raise heel during walking/standing
Where does the calcaneal tendon insert?
Posterior surface of the calcaneus
What is the weakest point of the Achilles tendon?
Middle third (due to poor vascularity)
What can cause Achilles tendon rupture?
Fluoroquinolones, corticosteroids, dialysis
What is the Thompson test?
Calf squeeze test – no foot movement = Achilles rupture
Which nerve supplies the deep posterior muscles?
Tibial nerve
What is the function of flexor hallucis longus?
Flexes hallux, supports medial arch
What is the function of flexor digitorum longus?
Flexes toes, supports both arches
