View on Crime

A

People have a real fear of crime
Crime = a real problem that requires a solution
Financial struggle = source of crime
Main victims of crime = disadvantaged groups (statistically)
Real increase in crime = led to an aetiological crisis; no evidence of crime increase
Most criminals = disproportionately black w/c male youth

Q

L/R Crime Prevention: Government Policy

A

Crime has strong influence on gov policy
L/R = similar to new labour: tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime
N/L: Firmer approach to hate crime / sexual assault & domestic violence
TONY BLAIRE - Introduced ASBOs to tackle crime & protect the vulnerable
NEW DEAL: New deal for unemployed youth
- Attempts to reserve the exclusion of young people who are @ risk of offending
:( - N/D has not led to permanent jobs
:( - ASBOs have become a badge of honour for disillusioned youth
