Lee et al Flashcards
Aim?
To investigate cross-cultural differences in children’s understanding and moral valuations of lying. the study aimed to compare the responses of Chinese and Canadian participants to stories that involved lying and truth telling, pro-social and antisocial situations
Research method?
Cross cultural method
Sample?
120 Chinese children recruited from elementary schools in Hangzhou and 108 Canadian children recruited from elementary schools in Fredericton in New Brunswick mostly from middle class families
Procedure?
For each cultural group, half the participants were randomly assigned to a social story condition and the other half to a physical story condition. The participants were read aloud four different stories each which were written to be familiar to schoolchildren in both cultures. At the end of each of the 4 stories, the child character was asked by the teacher who had carried out the deed. In 2 of the stories, the child character lied and in the others they told they truth. The children were then shown a 7 point rating chart which contained ratings. After explaining the chart, the stories were read aloud to individuals in a pre-arranged order in the participant’s own language and alongside illustrations. After, the ‘deed’ section of the story was read aloud, the children were asked the question ‘was what he/she did good or naughty?’ The children could respond verbally or nonverbally or both using the rating scale
