background
HOFSTEDE : individualism-collectivism as one dimension upon which cultures vary
^ I = identities defined by personal choices, self reliance, doing their own thing
^ C = identities defined by the groups they see themselves a part of, group harmony, group goals > individual goals
aim
- if the CULTURE (I or C) a child grows up in affects their views about lying
- if views of children about lying change as they get older

7: 40 (20m:20f) 36 (20m:16f)
9: 40 (20m:20f) 40 (24m:16f)
11: 40 (20m:20f) 32 (14m:18f)
procedure
each child had 4 fictional stories read to them
1. doing something pro social and lying to teacher
2. pro social and telling truth
3. anti social and lying
4. anti social and telling truth
^ half of children = social stories / others = physical stories
^ each story had to answer
1. is what XXX did good or naughty?
2. is what XXX said to the teacher good or naughty?
^ 7 point scale from very very good to very very naughty
findings
pro social stories
1. truth: china = view this less positively as they got older - ‘wanting praise’
2. lying: china = more positive getting older
anti social stories
1. truth: both = positive
2. lying: both = got more negative getting older
ethnocentrism
not being
= didn’t look at just one culture
being
= all participants are human and are taught growing up that lying is wrong in society
nature-nurture
nurture
^ moral development is shared by different cultures as a result of socio-cultural norms + practices : not only cognitive development (nature)
