LEDC City Problems - Cairo Flashcards
What are the main causes of the problems in Cairo?
• High population growth in the city
o High birth rates
o Rapid rates of rural-urban migration
What are the four areas of problems in managing Cairo?
- Housing
- Traffic
- Water pollution
- Air pollution
What are the causes of the housing problem?
Too many people due to rapid rural-urban migration and high fertility rates
What are the effects of the housing problem?
- High population density
- Overcrowding and homelessness
- Urban sprawl
- Development of houses on fertile land resulting in a loss of a source of food supply
- Illegal settlements
What are the attempts to manage housing problems?
- Creation of new settlements outside of the city rather than dealing with the squatter settlements that are there e.g. 6th October City.
- Link these settlements to Cairo with a Highway and the cities include housing, jobs, schools and shopping centres.
What are the causes of the transport problem?
- Increased numbers of people
- People are getting wealthier so there are more people who can afford to buy and run a car
- Old cars are used and they cause more pollution
What are the effects of the transport problem?
- Congestion – time consuming and stressful
- Health problems such as asthma
- Air pollution from the emissions
- More accidents
What are the attempts to manage transport problems?
- They have built a metro system
* They have built a ring road to take traffic out of the city
What are the causes of the water pollution problem?
An old sewerage system that cannot cope with the population growth and does not extend to all areas of the city
What are the effects of the water pollution problem?
- Sewage on the streets
- Smell
- Disease is spread through the city e.g. cholera
- Contaminated water supply
- Rats
What are the attempts to manage water pollution problems?
- Extended licence for rubbish collectors to collect in slums
- Extension of the sewers and modernisation in other areas.
What are the causes of the air pollution problem?
- Increased car use
- Industry
- Incineration of rubbish
What are the effects of the air pollution problem?
- Smog
- Poor quality air to breathe resulting in health problems e.g. asthma
- Contributes to global warming
What are the attempts to manage air pollution problems?
- Ring road and metro to reduce traffic in the city
- Industry changes to cleaner fuels
- Filters to reduced industrial pollution from chimneys
- Legislation on amount they can pollute and ensure that this is monitored and fines if not met.
