Q
What are the solutions in MEDC CBDS like Newcastle’s?
A
- Pedestrian only streets was one method - restricting motor vehicle access along shopping streets and allow shoppers to feel safe and have good air quality. E.g. Northumberland Street
- CBD shopping centres were covered. These give protection from the weather, are well-lit, reduce the distance shoppers have to walk between shops, and are ideal meeting places. They often have parking spaces making them more accessible. E.g. Eldon Square
- Investment was made in making the outside of old and historic look more attractive .e.g Grey’s Monument
- People have been encouraged to live in the flats above shops. If people live here then they will be more likely to use the shops and entertainment in the CBD at night.e.g at Monument
- Installing security cameras may help to reduce crime and make people feel safer using the CBD at night and during the day.
- Brownfield sites have been redeveloped to encourage businesses to locate in the city centre rather than on business parks on the outskirts of cities. The new office developments in the city are aesthetically pleasing, offer modern facilities, in air-conditioned buildings, an open plan office environment, open spaces for workers to take a break, improved public transport and sometimes underground parking. E.g Newacstle Science Park on the old brewery site
- All the traffic solutions that we have covered.
- Longer opening hours and free parking at night. E.g. Alive After Five
