What is a “Doctoring” Profession?
Has Internal controls such as Code of Ethics, Licensure Requirements and a formal professional organization; Recognition by society and provides services to patients/clients.

What is autonomous PT practice?
PTs maintain active responsibility (autonomy) for the growth of the profession and the health of the people they serve.
What is a PT’s Identity?
The responsibility to manage an individual’s movement system.
What does the movement system consist of?
The integration of body systems that generate and maintain movement at all levels of bodily function.
Which body systems are included in the movement system?
Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Integumentary, Nervous, Endocrine and musculoskeletal.

What is an Ethical Compass?
Set of internalized ideas, concepts, values, and duties
The purpose of Codes of Ethics?
- A consensus about the limits of self-interest within the profession
- Promote public trust
- Promote the public good and minimize harm
What is ethical temptation?
When there are two decisions but one involves a personal gain.
What is ethical distress?
When there is a right action to be made, however, there is pushback or a barrier in place.
What is an ethical dilemma?
When there are two right actions that compete with one another and only one can be chosen.
How to tell if something is a dilemma?
- Anything illegal taking place
- Does it feel wrong or do I have a strong “gut” reaction (stench test)?
- The mom test, would you feel comfortable telling your mom?
- Would you feel comfortable if what happened was on the news?
- Do the core documents support the decision?
What is ethical silence?
When no one mentions or does anything about a situation.
What is the rule-based approach?
Following the rules, procedures, methods, “standards of Care”.
What is the Ends-Based approach?
Doing what produces the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
What is the care-based approach?
Resolving dilemmas based on relationships and concern for others.
What is a conflict of interest?
When an individual can have a personal gain from a situation or when two parties have an incompatible interest in a situation.
Who are the Board of Regents?
They license individuals in professions and are responsible for the final decision in all disciplinary matters.
Who are the State Board for PT?
They make the decisions regarding PT and PTAs misconduct.
