Lecture6 Flashcards
What are the six components of female reproductive behavior?
1) Courtship 2)Mating 3)Ovulation 4)Pregnancy 5)Parturition 6) Lactation
Define Estrous
Estrous can be defined as the high circulating levels of estrogen that stimulate females (of certain species) to seek a mate
Described the 4 phases of estrous
1) vaginal estrous: cornified epithelium present, last about 36 hours
2) Diestrous I and II: fewer decreased number of cells, greater influx of Leukocytes WBC. lasts about 48 hours
3) Proestrous: marked reduction of Leukocytes. Presence of nucleated epithelial cells. Lasts 12 hours. Vaginal membrane disappears
Explain the correlation between Ovarian structures and Estrous cycle
Estrous: presence of newly rupture follicle following ovulation
Diestrous I: follicles enlarge and Antrum fills with water
Diestrous II: follicles enlarge and are now referred as Graafian follicles
Proestrous: rapid grow of Graafian follicles (preovulatory swelling)
Does vaginal estrous correlates with behavioral estrous ?
No. Behavioral estrous correlates with vaginal Proestrous.
What hormone is associated with physiological changes during estrous?
Physiological changes such as; vascular development, hypersecretion and growth of the mammary glands, are all mediated by estrogen
Progesterone and sexual behavior
Progesterone is required -along with estrogen- for behavioral estrous
There are two sources of progesterone: the Antrum fluid and the corpus lutea .
What are the bi-phasic behavioral effects of progesterone ?
Pre-ovulatory promotes behavioral estrous together with estrogen
Post-copulation inhibits mating behaviors
What are the three components of female sexual behavior?
Attractivity stimulus value of a female for a given male
Proceptivity extent to which females initiates copulation, overall behavior and motivation
Receptivity response to sexual initiation of another individual
All are influenced by estrogen levels
Attractiveness in humans
It changes during menstrual cycle.
During follicular phase masculine faces, voices, bodies and odors are preferred. Mediated by Estrogen and Androgens
During luteal phase -pregnancy- feminine traits are preferred. Mediated by progesterone.
What are the two phases of estrous cycle?
Follicular phase: prior to ovulation, when follicles are developing
Luteal phase: post ovulation when corpora lutea are producing high levels of progesterone. If it occurs when no mating or sterile mating results in pseudo pregnancy
Both cycles are suspended during pregnancy, pseu, and lactation
Pheromones and rodents
Two rodent pheromones have been isolated one produced by females which function by inhibiting gonadotropin release and one produce by males which stimulates release of LH
Pheromones and humans
Two females pheromones have been identify
1) follicular which shorten recipient cycle and accelerates surge of LH
2) ovulatory which increased length of recipient cycle and delays surge of LH
