- Societal norms that centre around age related expectation
- Certain things should happen at certain times of life eg: marriage & children
- Cultural in nature ie: adolescence is viewed differently according to culture

- Often unconscious in nature in Western Culture
- related to expectations and the way we are viewed
- not explicit

- Universal - Biologically based we all go through them
- Group Specific - Culturally based so may not be found in all cultures, Cohort Effects shared by individuals
- Individual Differences - influenced by unshared genetic and environmental factors

- Events and experiences shared by a group of people associated by age and time of place
