Lecture Three Flashcards
What are the four types of bones?
Long, short, flat, irregular
This bone is longer than it is wide. It has a thinner diaphysis and wider epiphysis.
Long bones
The wide part at the top and bottom of a long bone.
Epiphysis
The middle part of the bone.
Diaphysis
What type of bone is the humerus?
Long bone
What type of bone is the femur?
Long bone
This bone is roughly as long as it is wide. Associated with the bones in the hands and feet.
Short bone
What type of bones are the metacarpals?
Long bones
What type of bones are the tarsals?
Short bones
What type of bones are the ribs?
Flat bones
What type of bone is the skull?
Flat bones
What type of bones are the vertebrae?
Irregular bones
What type of bones are the hip bones?
Irregular bones
What are the two types of bones?
Compact and cancellous
This type of bone is harder and is more supporting.
Compact bone
This type of bone is good at transmitting force in a singular direction.
Compact bone
This type of bone is spongy and shock absorbing.
Cancellous bone
This type of bone is good at resisting forces coming in multiple directions.
Cancellous bone
Short bones are primarily made of this type of bone
Cancellous bone
What are the two skeleton categories?
Axial and appendicular
This category covers all bones in the trunk of the body
Axial
This category covers all the bones in the limbs.
Appendicular
This category of skeleton bones is important for movement
Appendicular
This category of skeleton bones is important for the protection of vital organs
Axial
This keeps your legs attached to the axial parts of the skeleton.
Pelvic girdle
The spinal column is divided into these parts.
Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, Sacrum and Coccyx
How many cervical vertebrae are there?
7
How many thoracic vertebrae are there?
12
How many lumbar vertebrae are there?
5
This bone attaches the hip bones to hold them together
Sacrum
This bone is also known as the tail bone
Coccyx
What are the two bones in the leg?
Tibia and fibula
What are the two bones in the forearm?
Radius and ulna
What are the three types of bones in the feet?
Tarsals, metatarsals, phalanges
What are the three types of bones in the hands?
Carpals, metacarpals, phalanges
This is the bone in the thigh
Femur
This is the bone in the arm
Humerus
This attaches the arms to the axial skeleton
Pectoral girdle
What are the 3 sections of the pelvis?
Ilium, pubis, ischium
What are the six parts of the skull?
Ethmoid, sphenoid, frontal, temporal, parietal, occipital
The cranium vault is held together with what immovable joint?
Sutures
What is the name of the joint holding together the frontal and two parietal parts of the skull?
Coronal suture
The skull cap is known as…
The calvaria
This is the joint that joins the two parietal bones
Sagittal suture
This is the joint that joins the 2 parietal and occipital parts of the skull together
Lambdoid suture
What bone that is part of the vault is most visible from an anterior view point?
Frontal
What bone that is part of the vault is most visible from a superior view point?
Parietal
These two parts of the vault form the base of the cranium
Sphenoid, ethmoid
This joint attaches the temporal part of the skull to the rest
Squamous suture
This curve in the spine is responsible for holding the head up
Cervical curve
This curve in the spine accommodates for the upper organs
Thoracic curve
This curve in the spine allows for balance of the trunk over the legs
Lumbar curve
This curve in the spine accommodates for abdominopelvic organs
Sacral curve
