Social location/positionality
Combination of factors particular to each individual (gender, race, age, ability, etc) that influence our experiences
Race (biological vs. social concept)
It is believed to be scientifically defined, but this is not factual. Race is actually a category of people who are perceived to share distinct physical characteristics that are deemed socially significant.
Ethnicity
Shared cultural heritage or nationality. Regarded as an identity
Differences/Similarities between Race and Ethnicity
DIFFERENCES:
-Race is more fixed and harder to hide
-Race is more based on others’ perception
SIMILARITIES:
-Socially defined
-Derive from history
Immigration (+ push and pull factors)
Movement of people from one country to another. Push factors are aspects of a country that make someone want to leave and Pull factors are ones that make them want to live there.
Brain Drain
Emigration of highly trained or intelligent people from a particular country
Racism
Belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
Prejudice
Favorable or unfavorable preconceived feelings or opinions formed without knowledge, reason, or thought that prevent objective consideration of an idea, individual, group, or thing
Scapegoating
Act of blaming a person or group for something bad that’s happened or someone else has done
Assimilation (melting pot)
Process whereby individuals or groups of differing ethnic heritage are absorbed into the dominant culture of a society
Pluralism (cultural mosaic)
Mixing of different cultures in which each one retains its own unique identity
Overt Discrimination
Clear and direct; not hidden
Subtle Discrimination
Unclear or indirect; difficult to analyze or describe because of perpetrator’s motivations being unclear
Systemic Discrimination
Prejudices embedded within the structures of a formal social organization and that create or perpetuate disadvantage for marginalized persons
Adaptive Discrimination
Based on the prejudice of others. Someone isn’t prejudiced but knows others are and fears consequences from them.
