Describe the anatomy of the nasopharynx and larynx (relevance to hoarse voice and tonsillitis)
What structures make up the pharynx
Nasopharynx ( in line with nose)
Osopharynx (in line with mouth)
Laryngopharynx (between pharynx and larynx)
What’s found in the nasopharynx region?
•Adenoid which is pharyngeal tonsil
The tubal tonsil which is found in the opening of the nasopharynx.
•Opening of the euschian tube
What’s found in the osopharynx region?
palatine tonsils
lingula tonsils
What in the laryngopharynx?
Opening to the epiglottis and crocoid
How does the eustachian tube differ in adults and children?
The eustachian tube in children is slightly more horizontal than it is in adults. Therefore children are more likely to get fluid buildup and infection compared to adults.

What type of cartilage Is the epiglottis made of?
The epiglottis is made of elastic cartilage.
What level is the hyoid bone ound on in the trachea?
The hyoid bone is found at C3.
What level is the thyroid cartilage found ?
Thyroid cartilage is found on level c4-c5
What level is the crocoid cartilage found?
The crocoid cartilage is found at C6.
What is the function of the larynx?
Phonation
Protection of the lower respiratory tract
Cough reflex
Describe the trachea structure
The trachea is made up of c shaped cartilage Which is a type of hyaline cartilage. The back of the trachea is supported by a smooth muscle known as trachealus. The trachea splits at T4-T5 into the bronchi. This is known as bifurcation.
what are tonsils?
tonsils are classified as mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), and therefore contain T cells, B cells and macrophages. They have an important role in fighting infection – the first line of defence against pathogens entering through the nasopharynx or oropharynx.
