Lecture IV. Changing climate patterns and human impacts Flashcards
What causes climate change and what are the consequences
greenhouse gases are causing climate change and its consequences are rising temperatures, loss of glaciers, loss of polar sea ice, sea level rise, more severe frequent storms, and ocean acidification
What happens as CO2 increases?
temperature is increasing along with CO2 levels
What historical event caused the increase in CO2
The industrial revolution, continue to emit a ton of CO2 into the environment
What caused the depletion of the atmospheric ozone?
Accumulation of chlorofluorocarbons caused this depletion, which has caused DNA damage in plants, phytoplankton and increased rates of skin cancer and cataracts in humans
Practice graphs and figures (will have some questions on the exam on understanding and analyzing graphs)
…
What causes biodiversity loss?
Habitat loss, introduced species (invasive species), over-harvesting, and global change
What does energy flow through
Energy flows through ecosystems and food chains start with primary production
What do food chains start with?
primary production
Primary production is limited by ___ in auqatic systems and ____ in terrestrial systems
limited by nutrients and light in aquatic systems & limited by moisture and temp in terrestrial systems
What link trophic levels
food chins link trophic levels
define primary producers
are at the base of the food chain
define detritivores
connect energy from all trophic levels
Define trophic levels
The position of organisms in the food chain
