II. Food Webs Flashcards
Define food chains
Links the tropic levels of an ecosystem from producers to top carnivores, are linear (producers —> carnivores)
- terrestrial and marine food chains
Primary producers
Autotrophs usually photosynthetic organisms, make up the tropic level ecosystem supporting all other levels
Food chain
Representation of the passage of energy from primary producers through various consumers to progressively higher tropic levels - unbranched
Decomposes/detritivores
Organisms that break down organic after from all trophies levels, consumers get their energy from detritus or non living organic matters
Trophies Levels and order
The position an organism occupies in a food chain
- Primary producers, 2. Primary consumers 3. Secondary consumers 4. Tertiary consumers 5. Quaternary consumers
Food webs are
A representation of the various paths of energy flow through populations in a community
What is the base tropic level in Green or grazing food webs
Base tropic level will be primary producers in green food webs (alive base)
What are autotrophs
Name your the trophic level of an ecosystem that ultimately supports all other levels at the base
What are detritivores?
Organisms that break down organic matter from all trophic levels
What is the base tropic level in brown food webs
Base tropic level is decaying plant matter (detritus) and dead animal matter (carrion) in brown food webs (dead base)
