Lecture III. Climate Patterns Global Flashcards
weather vs climate
weather is daily patterns vs climate is long term trends
Where is the sun hotter?
At the equator because light more direct. Hits the planet at the poles barely hitting the earth, less sunlight hitting, equator is the hottest part of the planet.
What causes seasons
the tilt of the earth
What are HADLEY CELLS
drive wind and precipitation patterns
- sun hits equator directly and air gets really warm, so it causes hot air to rise and cools down as it goes up, forming clouds
Why is there more precipitation taking place at the equator?
sun is directly hitting the equator causing warm air to rise and as it cools down it causes clouds to form.
what causes wind to bend
the coriolis effect
-The difference in how fast the equator is spinning in relation to the poles, the Coriolis effect bends wind to get a full rotation within 24 hours of the day.
Define orographic effects
orogrphic effects lead to rain shadows
- moist rising air moves from the ocean up, hits mountain and moves higher and gets colder as it rises, (water holds better when warm) and then the water falls out in the form of rain, other side of the mountain is the rain shadow region where the cold air moves down the mountain and gets warmer and drier.
How are regional climates moderated?
bodies of water (cooler near the coast, warmer the more inland)
