I. Energy Flow Flashcards
What is the movement of energy in an ecosystem
Sun > primary producers > primary consumers > secondary and tertiary consumers
- Energy is lost through heat energy
Define primary production (bottom of food chain)
Amount of light energy that is converted to chemical energy by autotrophs (per unit time)
Define GPP
Gross primary production of carbon dioxide produced by photosynthesis of plants in an ecosystem in a given period of time
NPP = GPP - R
Glucose produced during photosynthesis (GPP) > some of that glucose used to supply energy to drive cellular processes (respiration) and remaining glucose available to be laid down as new material (biomes) are (NPP) net primary production.
What limits NPP
Marine/freshwater = light and nutrients control
Terrestrial = moisture temp and to a lesser extent nutrients
Precipitation limitation in a terrestrial system has what relation
As net primary production increases, precipitation increases (more rain coming down)
