Lecture Exam 1 Flashcards
What is Trepanation?
An ancient procedure in which a hole was drilled into the brain and was done to treat health problems related to the brain.
What organelles are attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Ribosomes
What is cellular division of a somatic cell called?
Mitosis
What are membranes lining body cavities that do not have an opening to the outside world called?
Serous membranes which are composed of two layers a parietal layer, and a visceral layer.
Who is the father of medicine?
Hippocrates
Where is the thoracic cavity situated with respect to the abdominal pelvic cavity?
The thoracic cavity is the cavity with the lungs so it is above the abdominal pelvic cavity.
What is muscle tissue that is involuntary bifurcated and striated called?
Cardiac muscle
What is the relationship between structure and function?
What is interstitial fluid?
Fluid found in the spaces around cells and tissues
What is the anatomical position?
Someone laying flat on their back with their hands facing in an upward position.
What does the word axillary mean?
It is relating to the armpit area.
What level of organization do histologists focus their attention?
The tissues level of organization.
What does the skeletal system do?
Supports and protects
What does the term cephallic mean?
in, of or relating to the head
What are the first tissues that form in the human embryo?
Embryonic connective tissue /mesodyme
Who is credited with saving early anatomical works?
Iranians
Which cell junctions prevent epidermal cells from separating under tension?
hemidesmosomes
-anchors cells to the basement membrane
What type of epithelium lines the respiratory tract?
Endoderm
What are single appendages that occur from cell bodies called?
Cilia and Flagella- occur in large numbers; work together to move materials or fluids along the surface of a cell.
Prophase
First stage of mitosis, chromatin becomes supercoiled into relatively short, dense chromosomes. During prophase each chromosome contains two copies of its dna. The nucleoulus brakes down, and spindle fibers start to grow.
Metaphase
Occurs when the replicated chromosome alien up along the equatorial plate of the cells. Spindle fibers grow from each centriole toward the chromosomes
Anaphase
Spindle fibers pull sister chromatids apart at the centromere. They reel in a chromatid
Telophase
Begins once a group of chromosomes arrives at each cell pole. A new nuclear envelope forms around each set of chromosomes and the chromosomes begin to uncoil.
