How Do We Protect & Promote Health at the Global Level?
- World Health Organisation (WHO) plays an essential
role in the global governance of health and disease - International Health Regulations (IHR) (legally binding
instrument of international law)
The 196 nations/states bound by the IHR must…? (5)
- Designate a responsible authority, available at all
times for communication and collaboration with WHO
on emerging Public Health risks - Develop national capacity to ensure ability to detect,
assess, notify & report events of Public Health concern - Submit notification to WHO within 24 hours of receipt
of information of event which constitutes a Public
Health emergency of International concern - Consult with WHO on Public Health matters not
requiring formal notification, or for which there is
insufficient information to warrant notification - Develop capacity to respond promptly & effectively to
PH risks and emergencies
5 Reasons the IHR matters
- Health Threats have no Borders
- Travel & Trade are made Safer
- Global Health Security is Enhanced
- Daily Threats are kept under Control
- All Sectors Benefit
