lecture 9 - the chemical senses Flashcards
what is gustation?
the structure and function of taste
what are the 5 basic taste quals
sweet, salty, sour, umami or bitter
what are the types of papilla?
Filiform, Fungiform, Foliate and Circumvallate
what is filiform?
located over entire surface – no taste buds.
what is fungiform?
found on sides and tip of tongue.
what is foliate?
series of folds on back and sides.
what are the taste buds?
Transduction occurs when chemicals contact the receptor sites on the tips of the taste cell
what are the neural pathways from the tongue to the cortex?
solitary nucleus, vagus nerve, oral cavity, glossopharyngeal nerve and facial nerve
what is olfaction?
structure and function of odour
what is the olfactory mucosa?
Membrane that contains the cilia of the olfactory receptors.
what is the olfactory bulb?
Structure(s) containing the neural circuits that process olfactory information. Neurons receive information directly from the axons of the olfactory receptors
how do we identify odours?
concentration needed to determine quality of an odorant.
what is the puzzle of olfactory qual?
Some molecules that have similar structure smell different and Some molecules that have different structures smell the same
what are the neural pathways from the nose to the cortex?
olfactory bulb, piriform cortex and orbitofrontal cortex
what is flavour?
Flavour is a combination of smell, taste, and other sensations
