lecture 5 - depth perception Flashcards
what are the steps of the perceptual process?
1- stimulus in the environment
2 - stimulus hits the receptors
3 - receptor processes
4 - neural processing
5 - perception
6 - recognition
7 - action
what are the cues for depth perception?
oculomotor, monocular, binocular
what is a oculomotor cue?
movement from eyes
accommodation (move objects closer and push focus point back) and convergence (inward turning of our eyes)
what are monocular cues?
cues learnt from the environment
what are binocular cues?
how light is projected onto our eyes at any one time
- disparity - see world differently through each eye
what is stereoscopic vision?
the perception of depth as a result of retinal disparity
what are monocular depth cues?
pictorial cues and movement based cues
what are pictorial cues?
occlusion, shadows, relative size, relative height, texture gradients, atmospheric perspective, linear perspective convergence
what is occlusion?
When an object partially hides another object, the one that is occluded is perceived to be further away
what does relative size mean?
For objects of known equal size, the one that appears smaller is assumed to be further away
what does relative height mean?
Objects viewed as being higher are viewed as being further away e.g. bike 1 rather than bike 2/ the mountains
what does atmospheric perspective mean?
The farther away an object, the more air and particles (e.g., dust, water droplets, airborne pollution) are between us and the object making it appear less sharp
what are movement based cues?
motion parallax - Things closest to us moves very quickly, furthest away moves very slowly
who developed perceiving size?
Holway and Boring
what are visual angles?
represent the size of the image, As objects move closer to us the visual angle and size of the image on the retina increases
