lecture 5 - depth perception Flashcards

1
Q

what are the steps of the perceptual process?

A

1- stimulus in the environment
2 - stimulus hits the receptors
3 - receptor processes
4 - neural processing

Q

what is a oculomotor cue?

A

movement from eyes
accommodation (move objects closer and push focus point back) and convergence (inward turning of our eyes)

Q

what are binocular cues?

A

how light is projected onto our eyes at any one time
- disparity - see world differently through each eye

9
Q

what is occlusion?

A

When an object partially hides another object, the one that is occluded is perceived to be further away

Q

what does relative size mean?

A

For objects of known equal size, the one that appears smaller is assumed to be further away

Q

what does relative height mean?

A

Objects viewed as being higher are viewed as being further away e.g. bike 1 rather than bike 2/ the mountains

12
Q

what does atmospheric perspective mean?

A

The farther away an object, the more air and particles (e.g., dust, water droplets, airborne pollution) are between us and the object making it appear less sharp

Q

what are movement based cues?

A

motion parallax - Things closest to us moves very quickly, furthest away moves very slowly

Q

what are visual angles?

A

represent the size of the image, As objects move closer to us the visual angle and size of the image on the retina increases

Q

what is Holway and Borings experiment?

A

Participants presented with two luminous circles: a testing circle and a comparison circle
Comparison circle always 10 feet away
Testing circles between 10 and 120 feet but of different sizes
Visual angle of testing circles always 1°
Participants instructed to adjust comparison circle diameter to match testing circles

17
Q

what did Holway and Boring find?

A

Depth cues determine size constancy
Good depth information: size estimation based on actual size of objects
No depth information: size estimation influenced by objects visual angle
