lecture 1 Flashcards
what is perception as a model of the environment?
important distinction between the physical and perceptual – representation/ internal model of our environment is not simply a replica of our surrounding physical environment, some objects that you see in isolation may appear differently in the presence of other stimulus
what is top down processing?
perceptual or cognitive processing based on prior knowledge or experience – demonstrates how we view the world is not infallible but influenced by environment
what is bottom up processing?
perceptual or cognitive processing based on info coming directly from a stimulus and activating receptors in the sensory organ
what does how we perceive something depend on?
context - brightness, colour
how can we fail to see things which are actually there?
change blindness
where does perception occur?
our brains - neurons
where does sensation and perception occur?
tongue, skin, nose, muscles, eyes, ears
what is transduction?
process where environmental stimuli are converted or transduced into neural activity – electrical signals
what is transduction in the perceptual process?
1- stimulus in environment, 2 – light is reflected and focused, 3 – receptor processes (transduction), 4 – neural processing, 5 – perception, 6 – recognition, 7 – action
how do we study perception?
stimulus perception relationship, stimulus physiology relationship, physiology and perception relationship
