lecture 6 - motion perception Flashcards

1
Q

how do we move our eyes?

A

Muscles to pull our eyes in different directions - they can also rotate our eyes
Abducens nerve pulls the eye out

Q

how do we move our eyes?

A

1 - vergence - movement of each of our eyes which keeps the focus when we move objects closer or further away
Divergence - when moving away from us
2 - saccadic - fast movements of both eyes, rapidly between 2 parts of a scene - no control of speed of the saccade
3 - pursuit movements - movements we make to keep out phobia focussed on a moving object
4 - VOR - involuntary reflex, stabilises the image on the retina despite head movement

Q

what happens if we dont move our eyes - Riggs?

A

Participant wears contact lens with small mirror
An image projected to the mirror is reflected onto a screen
The image that the participant sees will move in line with their eye movements so that the image itself is always projected onto the same area of the retina
To begin with, the images appear normal
Within a few seconds, however, they begin to fade
After a short time, images can not be seen at all
