Lecture 9: interpersonal health communication Flashcards
definition interpersonal communication
= the exchange of messages between people influenced by human needs
we info via
- media messages
- social interactions
2 important elements:
- conversational occurrence: whether people talk about a topic
- conversational valence: how + or - people talk about a topic
3 roles conversational occurrence can be
- outcome health campaign
- mediator campaign effects (explains mechanism)
- moderator campaign effects (effect campaign depends on conversational occurrence)
importance of conversational occurrence
- negative conversations –> negative attitude/intention, less cannabis use
- positive conversations –> positive att/int, more cannabis use
article hendriks et al. results about conversational occurrence and health campaigns
rq= How does the interplay between health campaigns and interpersonal communication look like?
conditions:
- anti-alcohol campaign: exposure vs. no exposure
- conversation: about alcohol or control topic
dependent variable: intention to refrain from binge-drinking
results:
- if no ad: alcohol convo worse (lowest score) than no alcohol convo (highest score)
- if ad: alcohol convo better than no alcohol convo
- effect conversational occurrence about alcohol on intentions moderated by campaign exposure
article hendriks et al about alcohol and conversational valence
H1: Conversational valence mediates effect campaign on intentions
H2: Exposure to anti-alcohol campaign (vs. no exposure) makes participants talk more negatively about alcohol consumption
H3: Negative conversational valence associated with greater intentions to refrain from binge drinking
- same conditions as other article, except all participant talk about alcohol
results:
all hypothesis accepted
article hendriks, van den putte & de bruijn about the influence of emotions on conversational valence and alcohol consumption
hypothesis: emotion –> conversational valence about alcohol
- fear and disgust –> negative
- humor –> positive
conditions same as second article hendriks
results:
- fear –> negative conversations about unhealthy behavior (highest after disgust message)
- disgust/humor didn’t influence valence
conclusion lecture 9
- fear influences conversational occurrences and valence
2. negative conversational valence about unhealthy behavior has positive effects on health variables
