Lecture 9: Chloroplasts and Photosynthesis... Flashcards
What is Oxidative Phosphorylation?
Energy harvested from elections, NADH & FADH2.
These molecules are oxidized and the energy released is harvested to synthesize ATP
Where are the high energy electrons residing in Oxidative Phosphorylation?
NADH and FADH2
What are the other names for Oxidative Phosphorylation?
Chemiosmotic coupling or chemiosmosis
Where does Oxidative Phosphorylation occur?
in the plasma membrane of respiring prokaryotes and the inner mitochondrial membrane of eukaryotes
Mitochondria have what kind of membrane?
Double membrane, one outer and inner.
Describe the outer membrane of a mitochondria?
contains porins making it permeable to smallmolecules/ions. not proteins.
Describe the inner membrane of a mitochondria?
is impermeable, extensively folded. Called Cristae
What process occur’s in the mitochondria?
Glycolysis of NADH, from outside membrane with FAD + 2H from inner membrane matrix. Creating FADH2.
NADH releases 2 electrons which are picked up by FADH2
