Lecture 9 Chemoreception and other senses Flashcards
What is olfaction?
Smell
Role of Olfaction (4)
Feeding
Navigation
Reproduction
Predator Avoidance (fright reaction)
general structure of Olfaction (3)
external nares irrigate olfactory rosette
rosette bears receptor cells
most fish have no connection to oral cavity=No respiratory function
Nares (3)
most fish have 2 pairsof nares (anterior & posterior)
some have lost posterior nare
some have anterior & posterior nares coalesced
what is gustration
taste
taste buds (3)
-receptor is the taste bud
-located in epithelium of the
mouth, pharyngeal region, gill arches
-also externally in some spp. on barbels, fin rays and body surface
commonly on lips and head of bottom feeders
role of taste (3)
important to initiate feeding behavior (stimulus)
external gustation important for location of food
mating for fish that use mouth during courtship
