Lecture 7 Sensing Fish Flashcards
Roles of colour in fish (6)
-countershading
-mimicry
-disruptive (stripes to break up outline)
-disguise (camouflaged as another object or plant)
-camouflage
-advertisement
colour change (2)
-Schematochromes are mirror like surfaces filled with chromatophores
-change happens when the nervous or endocrine systems change the location of chromatophores and concentration of pigment
Bioluminescence (3)
-occurs in photophores (cells filled with symbiotic bacteria)
-reaction without heat (luciferin+ATP+O2 = luciferase = light)
-can be used for communication, obtaining prey, avoiding predators
production of electricity
Electricity comes from modified muscle cells that stack up on each other like batteries building up voltage differentials
