Postpartum depression
symptoms include feelings of sadness, anxiety, overwhelm, and a lack of affection for the newborn. There may also be irritability, guilt, hopelessness, changes in eating and sleeping, and disturbing thoughts about harming the baby or oneself.
postpartum anxiety
is an intense fear for the baby’s well-being, as well as concerns about external factors like finances and adjusting to the new maternal role. It may be accompanied by physical symptoms such as panic attacks, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, and a loss of control.
Postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder
is characterized by persistent intrusive thoughts or mental images related to the baby, leading to repetitive behaviors to alleviate the fear. This can manifest as overprotectiveness or a fear of being alone with the baby.
Postpartum stress disorder
results from real or perceived trauma during or after childbirth, with symptoms including flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, avoidance of trauma-related triggers, irritability, hypervigilance, panic attacks, and dissociation.
Postpartum psychosis
involves hallucinations, rapid mood swings, paranoia, insomnia, distrust of familiar faces, and irrational beliefs.
Maternal mental health risk factor
- history of mental health, perfectionnism, ado pregnancy, low socioeconomic status, limited social support, big life transition
