Personality
enduring patterns of thinking, feeling and reacting that define a person
Personality disorders
a clinical construct used to understand, describe and communicate about the complex phenomena that result when the personality system is not functioning optimally: “an enduring pattern of inner experience and behaviour that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual’s culture”
PB: 3 types of failures
- Failure to establish integrated representations of self and others;
- Interpersonal dysfunction with failure to develop capacity for intimacy, to function adaptively as an attachment figure, and/or establish the capacity for affiliative relationships;
- Failure to function adaptively in the social group as indicated by the failure to develop the capacity for prosocial behavior and/or cooperative relationships.
General PB criteria
1) pattern of deviation (2 ou +):
-Cognition (ways of perceiving and interpreting self, others, events)
-Emotional
- Interpersonal functioning (capacity for intimacy, stability of relationships,
responses ( autonomy)
range, intensity, lability, appropriateness)
- Impulse control (over- or under-control)
2) Must be inflexible, pervasive across a broad range of situations
3) Must be a source of clinically significant distress or functional impairment
5) Must be stable and of long duration, onset in adolescence or early adulthood
Why is important to know if pt has PD ?
1) guide tx
2) mx + therapy = better
3) Avoid confusion (who pt react)
4) Anticipate reaction
5) protect yourself
Paranoid PD
Pervasive distrust and suspiciousness of others such that their motives are interpreted as malevolent (batman)
Schizoid PD
Pervasive pattern of detachment from social relationships and restricted expression of emotion (Carlos)
Schizotypal PD
Pervasive pattern of interpersonal deficits marked by acute discomfort with and reduced capacity for close relationships as well as cognitive or perceptual distortions and eccentricities of behavior (Jocker)
Antisocial PD
Pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since the age of 15 years ( Wolf of wall street)
Borderline PD
Pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self image and affect and marked impulsivity (Gatsby)
Histrionic PD
Pervasive pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking (Madonna)
Narcissistic PD
A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy (Queen’s Gambit)
Avoidant PD
Pervasive pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy and hypersensitivity to negative evaluation ( Charlie Brown)
Dependent PD
Pervasive and excessive need to be taken care of that leads to submissive and clinging behaviors and fears of separation (Bella)
