Lecture 8.5 - Ligaments of the Knee Flashcards
What are the attachments of the fibular/lateral collateral ligaments?
L8.5 S4
Proximal:
-lateral epicondyle of femur
Distal:
-lateral aspect of fibular head
What are the attachments of the tibial/medial collateral ligaments?
L8.5 S6
Proximal:
-medial epicondyle of femur
Distal:
-medial condyle and superior part of medial tibia
What are the attachments of the oblique popliteal ligaments?
What are its functions?
L8.5 S7
Proximal:
-lateral femoral condyle
Distal:
-posterior to medial tibial condyle
Functions:
-reinforces joint capsule posteriorly
What are the attachments of the arcuate popliteal ligaments?
What are its functions?
L8.5 S7
Proximal:
-oblique popliteal ligament
Distal:
-posterior to fibular head
Functions:
-reinforces capsule posterolaterally
What are the attachments of the anterior cruciate ligaments?
What are its functions?
L8.5 S8
Proximal:
-posterior part of medial surface of lateral condyle of femur
Distal:
-anterior intercondylar area of tibia
Functions:
- prevents posterior displacement of femur on tibia
- prevents hyperextension of knee
- limits posterior rolling of femoral condyle
What are the attachments of the posterior cruciate ligaments?
What are its functions?
L8.5 S9
Proximal:
-anterior part of lateral surface of medial condyle of femur
Distal:
-posterior intercondylar area of tibia
Functions:
- prevents hyperflexion of knee (anterolateral bundle)
- prevents hyperextension of knee (posterolateral)
What are the attachments of the transverse ligaments?
L8.5 S4
Connects anterior aspects of medial and lateral menisci
What are the characteristics of the menisci of the knee?
L8.5 S10
Lateral meniscus:
- almost fully circular
- freely moveable
- attaches to PCL via posterior meniscofemoral ligament
Medial meniscus:
- C-shaped
- less mobile
- attaches to MCL
