Lecture 8- Pharynx and Larynx Flashcards
Name the 3 parts of the pharynx from superior to inferior.
Nasopharynx
Oropharynx
Laryngopharynx
What are the borders of the nasopharynx?
roof of the nasal cavity (sphenoid bone)
soft palate
What are the borders of oropharynx?
soft palate
top of epiglottis
What are the borders of the laryngopharynx?
top of epiglottis
esophagus
Where does the pharyngeal raphe? What bone is this located on?
pharyngeal tubercle
occipital
What is the area where the pharygeal muscles come together posteriorly?
pharyngeal raphe
What is the innervation of the pharyngeal constrictors?
pharyngeal plexus (IX and X)
What is the vestibular fold also called?
false vocal cord
What is the vocal fold also called?
true vocal cord
Which structure is more superior: the true or false vocal folds?
false vocal fold (vestibular fold) is more superior
What is the region superior tot he false (vestibular) vocal fold known as?
vestibule/supraglottic cavitiy
What is the region inferior to the true vocal fold known as?
infraglottic cavity
What is another name for the supraglottic cavity?
(laryngeal) vestible
What is the anatomical term for the adam’s apple?
laryngeal prominence
Where does the epiglottic cartilage attach?
to the thyroid cartilage
How is the epiglottis closed during swallowing?
cartilages move up and it is passively closed by the mouth
Name the 3 sets of paired cartilages in the larynx.
2 arytenoid cartilages
2 corniculate cartilages
2 cuniform cartilages
What are the names for the pockets on either side of the hypo-eptiglottic ligament that can catch food?
vallecule
What is the name for the ligament that runs from the vocal ligament (true vocal folds) to the criothyroid ligament)?
cricothyroid ligament (conus elasticus)
What are the attachments of the quadrangular membrane?
epiglottis to false vocal cords (vestibular folds)
What is the name for the vocal aperture?
rimma glottidis
What provides motor innervation for the laryngeal muscles?
Recurrent laryngeal nerve from vagus (CN X)
except the Cricothyroid which is innervated by the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve
What nerve innervates the cricothyroid muscle?
recurrent laryngeal nerve of the vagus (CN X)
What pharyngeal arch does the larynx develop from?
arches 4&6
What nerve carries sensation from the larynx (GSA) fibers?
above the vocal fold- superior laryngeal nerve
below the vocal fold- recurrent laryngeal nerve
What muscles are continuous with the oblique arytenoids and act to close the epiglottis?
aryepiglotticus
What is the laryngeal muscle that abducts the vocal fold?
posterior cricoarytenoid
