Lecture 8 - Motivation for Movement Flashcards
What is motivation
the psychological drive which arouses an individual to take action to achieve a desired goal. it involves biological, emotional, cognitive and/or social factors
what is the relationship between intensity and direction
if you are able to encourage (motivate) a weightlifter to workout at the gym 4 times per week, they will probably do it with great intensity. the intensity can increase even more if the direction is about an important competition
What are the approaches to motivation
- Personality traits
- external influences
- interactional views
what are personality traits? [b=f(p)]
- describes motivation as something the athlete inherently possesses.
- personal factors which predispose the athlete e.g. predisposed to inherently high or low motivation levels
What are external influences [b=f(E)]?
Motivation levels that can be determined by the situation. e.g. Coach, weather, opposition, teammates, referee
What are interactional views [b=f(p x e)]?
Motivation level is determined by both personal factors and the situation
- interaction - personality, self-esteem, expectations, goals, coaching style, spectator/social support, level of competition , teammates
What is behaviour
the direction of behaviour reflects the individuals level of personal interest in a specific task or activity - important for psychologists to understand what drives behaviour and what maintains it
what is intrinsic motivation
engaging in an activity for it’s own sake, without needing an obvious external incentive - sheer enjoyment from completing a goal of interest, or enjoying the processes that lead to the final outcome
what is extrinsic motivation
being influenced by another person or situation to engage in activity, or to change your behaviour e.g trophies, prize money, social recognition, praise
What are the guidelines to building motivation
- consider both traits and situations in motivating people
- understand multiple motives for involvement
- change the environment
- enhance motivation
- modify behaviour
What are the 3 theories of motivation
pg 8
- Attribution theory
- achievement goal theory
- competence motivation theory
what are the training motivation
S - Specific M - Measurable A - Attainable/Achievable R - Realistic T - Timely
What is imagery and self-talk?
Imagery - imagine you performing a physical activity
Self-talk - pep yourself up, instructions we give ourselves.
