Siegel - morphine intolerance
NS - sight of needle
US - Pain relief
UR - compensatory effects opposing pain relief
CS - sight of stimuli associated with taking morphine
CR - Compensatory reactions opposing pain relief
Siegel (1982) Rats and heroin
- Rats injected with heroin or placebo for 30 days
- one group received heroin in distinctive room and placebo in colony room
- second group had this the other way around
- third group had no heroin injections
-final test day- high does of heroin in either same room or different room

Highest mortality rate when given in different room (besides control group)
Gerevich (2005)
Man took heroin in a different room and then died, despite having taken the same amount as the previous day
Garcia and Koelling (1966) Taste aversion
taste and illness = can be easily learnt, as can audiovisual signal and shock
BUT taste -> shock and audiovisual signal -> illness not learnt as well
