Lecture 3 - Structure of the nervous system Flashcards
What does the CNS consist of?
Brain and spinal cord
What does the PNS consist of?
Nerves carrying information to and from the body, controlling muscles and organs
What is a nerve?
Several axons running together
What is the somatic nervous system?
Interacts with the external environment
efferent nerves
carry motor signals from CNS to muscles
afferent nerves
Carry sensory signals from sense organs
What is the autonomic nervous system?
regulates the body’s internal environment
What does the ANS consist of?
Sympathetic (activation) and Parasympathetic (resting) systems
What does the spinal cord do?
Transmits information to and from the brain
- Simple and more complex reflexes
What are the protective membranes in the brain?
Dura mater
Arachnoid layer
Pia mater
What connects the 3rd and 4th ventricles?
Cerebral aqueduct
What is the role of the medulla
Controls essential life functions
What is the Pons
‘bridges’ the bump due to fibres crossing over from one side to the other
What is the cerebellum
Co-ordination of movement
What is the role of the tectum
produces orientating movements to sensory inputs
