Lecture 4 - brain damage Flashcards
What are meningiomas
Tumours that grow between the meninges, typically benign
What are infiltrating tumours?
Growing within the brain tissue - difficult to remove
What is a haemorrhagic stroke?
bleeding, may be caused by burst aneurysm, very dangerous
What is an ischemic stroke?
Blood supply occluded, most common type 85%
What is Alzheimer’s disease?
Loss of neurons and synapses
Cortical atrophy
Build up of protein clumps
What type of amnesia did HM have?
Anterograde - Cannot remember events after brain damage has occurred, but can remember events before the damage
What part of Gage’s brain was damaged?
Temporal lobe
What types of memory were effected in HM?
Episodic and semantic
What role does the hippocampus play in memory?
important in memory consolidation, in particular explicit memories
