Lecture 8: Athlete testing Flashcards
Anthropometrics that are measured
Height
Weight
Body fat %
Wingspan
Hand size
Physical variables in sport testing
Muscular strength
Muscular power
Speed
Agility
Local muscular endurance
Anaerobic capacity
Aerobic capacity
Flexibility, balance, stability
Muscular strength
Force a muscle or muscle group can exert in one maximal effort
Muscular power
Ability of muscle tissue to exert high force while contracting at high speed
- tested as 1RM in case of power clean or by a vertical jump height
Speed
Movement distance per unit time, time taken to cover a fixed distance
Agility
The ability to change direction or speed of the whole body in response to to a sport specific stimulus
**change of direction
Local muscular endurance
Ability of certain muscles or muscle groups to perform repeated contractions against a submaximal resistance
- tests such as pull ups or push ups
Anaerobic capacity
Maximal rate of energy production by the combined phosphagen and anaerobic glycolytic energy systems for moderate-duration activities
- muscular activity for 30-90 sec
Aerobic capacity
Maximal rate at which an athlete can produce energy through oxidation of resources
- expressed as a volume of O2 consumed per kg of body weight per min (beep test and yoyo test)
Flexbility
Range of motion of a joint
Balance
Ability to maintain static and dynamic equilibrium
Testing protocols- muscular strength
1 RM
Testing protocols- muscular power
Power clean, vertical jump, broad jump, med ball throws
What does the vertec test?
- How high off ground you jump
- How high you can reach
Scoring the vertec
Red peg= 6”
White peg = 1/2”
Blue peg = 1”
