What is the snatch?
1 distinct movement
Barbell moves from ground to an overhead position
What is the clean and jerk?
2 distinct movements
1. Barbell from ground to shoulders (clean)
2. Barbell from shoulders to overhead (jerk)
How is the winner of each weight class decided in the sport of weightlifting?
Highest combined total for the two lifts
How is weightlifting scored?
Must get 2/3 white lights to count
Equipment for olympic weightlifting
- Lifting shoes
- Olympic lifting belt
- Bumper plates
- Olympic weightlifting barbell
Lifting shoes purpose
Elevates heel to allow for greater depth and maintain upright position
If you can get deeper you dont have to lift bar as high- allows for increased weight
Olympic lifting belt purpose
Creates intra-abdominal pressure
Olympic barbell vs regular
Olympic has smooth centre while regular has knurling along centre to add friction
‘Hang’
Bar starts above ground at knees
‘Power’
Bar is caught with thigh above 90 degrees
‘Full’ or ‘Squat’
