Lecture 8&9 done Flashcards
WHy do we study solutions of electrolytes?
for fluid replacement
How can you tell if a solution has electrolytes?
If electricity can pass through and light a lightbulb
Why do electrolytes conduct electricity?
Because they dissacociate in solution into ions which are charged molecules
What are three types of electrolytes?
acids, bases, and salts
Why does a solute dissacociate into ions?
because the interaction with water molecule is highly stabilizing
What is the differeance between strong and weak electrolytes?
strong fully disassociated in water, weak only partially disassociates
Why do electrolyte solutions have more colligative properties?
because there is a greater number of particles in solution
What is the van’t hoff factor for 1:1 electrolytes?
2
What is the van’t hoff factor for 2:1 electrolytes?
3
What is the van’t hoff factor for 3:1 electrolytes?
