Lecture 8 Flashcards
what is the main focus of doctors?
repairing/curing disease-induced damage to the body (rather than preventing)
primary prevention
services the doctor can provide or prescriber to provide confirmation of a problem (like a mammogram for breast cancer or pap tests)
secondary prevention
cognitive and behavioural strategies like stress counselling or PA counselling
sick role
temporary social role designed to return sick people to a state of health as quickly as possible (ex. staying at home from work when sick)
at-risk role
social role where an individual is aware that they are at risk and want to do something to reduce the possibility
- patient is actively engaged and helps identify the amount and type of info that is beneficial
- takes more time but better understanding the part of the patient and the doctor
doctor centred
- supplies knowledge and skills for benefit of patient
- objective and emotionally detached
- physician is the heart of the health care system
biomedical solutions
in the sick role
- focus on curing or managing through biological/physical treatments
lifestyle solutions
- the at-risk role
- focus on lifestyle/behavioural changes in order to prevent/reduce the possibility of acquiring a disease
one-way information flow
- sick role with doctor centered
- physician to patient
- passively receive info from doctor
- must interview each patient to reach the diagnosis and prescribe a solution as quickly as possible
two way information flow
- partnership between physician and patient
- less authoritarian
- both actively engaged
- patients provide input
- treatment adapted to individuals wishes
sick role emphasis on individual change
- physician expects full cooperation from patient
- sickness can be cured/managed
- patient is exempt from normal responsibilities in order to concentrate on returning to good health
- sickness is not desirable
at-risk role emphasis on changing the social environment
- recognizes illness can be due to social and environment conditions
- targets change in the social environment/institutions such as family
what types of people do physicians most likely counsel about PA?
- overweight/obese
- chronic disease such as hypertension, CV disease, cancer, diabetes
- upper class people
lack of counseling
because some physicians fail to recognize its importance and some are not active themselves
