Sociology
study of social life ex. social interaction and relationships that are ALWAYS being influenced by peers
Culture
way of life people create in a specific group or society at a particular time and place
Society
collection of people living in a defined geographical territory and united through a political system and a shared sense of self-identification that distinguishes them from others
3 levels of sociological analysis
macro level ( societal norms, values, role in society, social institutions) micro level (groups) individual level
what are the 3 main goals of sociology in sport?
- look at PA and associated heath outcomes beyond the regular understanding
- identify & analyze patterns of change or stability
- critique PA programs to recommend change for enhancement and quality
Epidemiology
study of determinates and distributions of disease (science of epidemics- infectious disease)
Social Epidemiology
study of role of behavioural, social, psychological, economic, cultural and social structural factors in the occurrence of health and health problems and their risk factors
Social structural factors
encompass +/- factors within society’s structure that influence activity and participation
Health
state of complete physical, mental and social well being
NOT just absence of disease
Risk Factors
increase chance of onset of disease or injury
Physical activity
any body movement produced by skeletal muscle that results in a substantial increase over resting energy expenditure
exercise
planned, structured, repetitive PA designed to improve or maintain at least one component of physical fitness (whether heath or performance)
Leisure time physical activity
activity done in free time with substantial increase in total daily energy expenditure that is PERSONAL CHOICE
Physical fitness
set of attributes that people have or achieve that relates to their abilities to perform PA
Health related components of fitness
affected by regular PA and relate to health status: aerobic endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, body comp
performance related components of fitness
components of fitness affected by regular PA and relate to performance: muscular power, speed, agility, balance, reaction time
Sport
form of leisure time PA that is planned, structured and competitive
active living
way of life in which PA is valued and integrated into daily living

canadian physical activity guidelines
what are the PA guidelines for adults 18-64
150+min/week in bouts of 10 min or more, mod-big, 2 days/week bone strengthening
What are the PA guidelines for adults 65+
150min+/week plus functional abilities
What are the PA guidelines for children and youth
60+ min/day plus vigourous at least 3x a week and bone at least 3 a week
what should screen time be limited to?
2 hours a day
