Lecture 8 Flashcards
Define Inference
a very good guess
What is Inferential Statistics?
Not practical to know mean of a population so we must infer the mean & error of a population
- taking sample data & giving study a certain amount of chance for being right or wrong (use P values)
Define Population (of a study)
Set of all individuals of interest in a particular study
Define Sample
Set of individuals from a population that are intended to represent the population & are randomly selected
What is a Parameter?
- derived from…?
A value that describes a population
- derived from measurements of all individuals in the population
What is a Statistic?
- derived from…?
A value that describes a sample
- derived from measurements of individuals in the sample
What are the 2 Solutions to estimate error in a sample?
1.) Standard Deviation Correction
2.) Standard Error of the Mean (SEM)
What is Standard Error of the Mean (SEM)?
The amount of error that may exist when a random sample mean is used to predict a population mean
What is the equation for SEM?
SEm = SD/square root of N
4 reasons why Z Scores are Valuable
1.) allow to compare to the normal curve
2.) allow us to make predictions
3.) allow us yo test hypotheses
4.) allow us to understand the risk of being wrong
Is the Standard deviation of a population larger or smaller than that of a sample?
Population Standard Deviation is smaller than Standard Deviation of a Sample as there is no “-1” on the N as we do not need to account for the error
What are the percentages of
