Lecture 7: Workload, Fatigue, Emotion, and Distraction Flashcards
What is arousal level?
an individual’s degree of alertness or responsiveness to stimuli
What is Yerkes-Dodson Law?
shows the relation between level of arousal (induced by stress) and performance. The optimal level of arousal is higher for simple tasks.
What are the types of metal states?
workload, fatigue, emotions, and distractions
What is mental workload?
amount of mental work or effort necessary to perform a a task
What factors influence mental workload?
task demands (number of tasks, required accuracy, time)
environmental conditions (high noise)
individual operator characteristics
What is the primary measure of workload?
performance
What is the secondary measure of workload?
assessing residual resources to complete a secondary task
What are some physiological measures of mental workload?
pupil dilation: bigger
fixate duration: longer
heart rate: higher
heart rate variability: smaller
What is sleep related fatigue?
violation of natural circadian rhythm that causes fatigue
What is passive fatigue?
caused by tasks in a monotonous environment with an underload mental condition, such as in highly automated systems
What is active fatigue?
induced by high demand situations with constant maneuvers
What are some physiological measures of mental workload?
not pupil, dilation, HR, or HR variability
PERCLOS: eyelid 80% closed
blink rate: higher
blink duration: longer
What is a subjective measure of fatigue?
Karolinska Sleepiness Scale
What are the two dimensions of emotion?
valence and arousal
the combination of these two give discrete emotions
What is a subjective measure of emotion?
the self-assessment manikin SAM
