Lecture 7 - Regulation of immune response and immunological tolerance Flashcards
what is the definition of immunological tolerance?
what is it needed for the prevention of?
a state of unresponsiveness of the immune system to antigens that would normally elicit an immune response
needed to prevent an unwanted autoimmune response
what is immunological ignorance?
when antigens are not presented at sufficient levels to activate T cells / an immune response
if an individual has NO immunological tolerance, what happens?
autoreactivity / unwanted autoimmune response / autoimmune disease
what do useless T cells fail to recognize?
self - MHC molecules / self-peptides from antigens
what do useless T cells fail to pass in the medulla of the thymus?
negative selection
what does the autoimmune regulator protein AIRE induce?
what would an individual with a deficiency of this protein develop?
immunological tolerance
autoimmune disease
B cell tolerance is generated by which process?
where does this occur?
negative selection = anergy
in bone marror
T cell tolerance is generated by which process? where does this occur specifically?
negative selection
in medulla of thymus
what are T reg cells responsible for preventing?
autoimmune response
T reg cells can be either natural or…..
induced in the periphery / iTreg
which interleukin do B reg cells secrete?
IL-10
by suppressing the immune system, what do T reg cells aid in a female?
allow successful placentation in pregnancy
CD4+ TH1 cells secrete which interferon?
gamma
TH 1 cells are responsible for the activation of which 3 immune cells?
cytotoxic t cells
macrophages
NK cells
TH 2 cells are associated with which 3 interleukins?
4, 5 and 13
