Lecture 7 - Proprioceptive guidance of movement Flashcards
What is the role of a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation device?
- Electrically stimulates nerves
- Can help eliminate the sensation of pain
What is the gate control theory?
- Interneurons can act as a gate
- Allowing some sensory signals to go to the brain instead of painful signals
What is the role of Proprioceptors?
They inform the central nervous system about relative position of body parts
What information so muscle spindles convey?
Muscle length
What information do Golgi tendon organs convey?
Muscle force
What information doe join receptors convey?
Joint angle (extremes)
What information do cutaneous mechanoreceptors convey?
Skin deformations
what ways can the CNS use proprioceptive information?
- Maintain central excitability
- Negative feedback control
- Learning
- Info on present status of muscles
What are the 4 stages of voluntary movement?
- Idea
- Plan/program
- Execute
- Move
What are the features of ‘ballistic’ voluntary movement?
- Fast movements
- Pre-programmed from experience
- Feed-forward control
What are the features of ‘pursuit’ voluntary movement?
- Slow movements
- Continuously adjusted
- Feedback control
what are two ways you can prove that proprioceptive guidance of movement exists? [2]
- Study the absence of proprioceptive information on movement
- Study the stimulation of proprioceptive signals on movement
What is Sjogren’s syndrome?
Disease caused by damage to the afferent neurons
How can absence of proprioception be dealt with?
Using auditory and visual mechanisms to compensate
