Lecture 15 - Premotor cortex Flashcards
How does the activation of premotor areas change over time?
They change progressively as the performed task becomes automatic
How does the neural control of a task change as proficiency and skill are acquired?
The neural control shifts from the supplementary motor area to the primary motor cortex
When are primary motor cortex neurons fired?
During the performance of visually cued and memorised sequences
When are supplementary motor area neurons fired?
During the performance of memorised sequences only
When are ventral premotor neurons fired?
During the performance of visually cued sequences only
How are neurons directionally tuned during the planning period?
Initially towards rightward movements
Where does the ventral premotor area recieve its main input during tasks?
From neurons with similar task related properties in the anterior intraparietal region
What is the main role of the inrtaparietal cells?
They play a role in transforming the dimensions of an oject in visual space into motor signals
How is the act of grabing a cup of tea broken down?
- Reaching
- Grasping
What are reaching movements dependent on?
Location of target relative to the body, shoulder, or hand
What are grasping movements dependent on?
The shape and dimensions of the object
Do reaching and grasping happen simultaneously?
Yes
What id affordance?
- The property of an object/environment which allows an individual to perform an action
- E.g. A cord affords pulling
How does the visual system identify a target?
It identifies the parts that allow for effecient manipulation of the object
What do canonical neurons respond to?
The sight of 3D objects
