Lecture 6 - Spinal interneurons and spinal reflexes Flashcards
Which layers of the spinal cord are the dorsal horn?
Layers 1-6
Which layers of the spinal cord are intermediate?
Layer 7-8
Which layer of the spinal cord are the ventral horn?
Layer 8
What part of the spinal cord is linked to sensory information?
Dorsal horn
Which part of the spinal cord is linked to the interneurons?
Intermediate part
Which part of the spinal cord is linked to motor neurons?
Ventral horn
What is the role of spinal interneurons?
- Act as convergence of inputs
- Mainly inhibitory
- Some excitatory
What is the reflex arc?
The mechanisms involved in generating a reflex to a stimulus
What is a reflex?
An involuntary coordinated pattern of muscle contraction and relaxation elicited by a peripheral stimulus.
What can supra-spinal centres modulate?
Spinal reflexes
What is a myotatic reflex?
- Stretch reflex
- Muscle contracts in response to its lengthening
What is the sensory receptor in the stretch reflex?
Muscle spindle primary ending
What is the function of the stretch reflex?
- Resist unwanted lengthening
- Negative feedback control of muscle contractions
How are inhibitory interneurons activated at rest?
By golgi tedon organs
What happens when inhibitory interneurons are inhibited by other interneurons?
- Motor neurons are activated
- Muscle contracts
