A Pacific model of health: Fonofale model

Describe its purpose and its 10 aspects

A

This model can help us understand and treat our Pacific people in a more holistic, safe and effective manner

  1. Family = so when treating Pacific people or prescribing info to them in context that requires their WW; it’s important to think about the context of family
  2. Physical = determining what the priorities are in terms of physical health have to be seen in the context of the wider model of Health
  3. Spiritual = about being mindful that people have very strong views about what it means for them being well and spiritual is a very important component of that.
  4. Mental = if born in islands and then moved here - you;re apparently yo have better mental health than if you were born here
  5. Other = SES
  6. Time = this dimension dresses the relationships and uniqueness of Pacific people on their physical environ - could be rural or urban setting (e.g. 1pm means 1:30pm to Pacific people lol)
  7. Context = where/how/what and the meaning it has for that particular person or people
  8. Environment
  9. Includes -sexuality, gender, age, SES
  10. Culture = the roof represents values and beliefs that’s the shelter for life. These include beliefs in traditional methods of healing as well as western methods (regardless of culture, you need to know who you are)

Q

Why is it important to consider Pacific health?

A

Pacific peoples make up 7 % of New Zealand’s total population and they suffer disproportionately from poor health outcomes as presented using selected health indicators. Those working within the health sector have a responsibility towards improving outcomes for all New Zealanders.

Q

Describe the relationship between socio-economic status and Pacific health

A

The evidence suggests that socio-economic status influences health outcomes. Those who live in the most deprived areas of New Zealand (Decile 8-10) have poorer health outcomes compared to those in the least deprived areas (Decile 1-3). Pacific people are over-represented in the most deprived areas of New Zealand.
